Over the past several weeks I have been helping my friend move his blog, the Library Despot, to a new home. It has been fun and I have deffenantly learned a few things about making sure what type of database backups to have and the different versions of database software can cerate much, much fun. In the end I must say that it was quite the learning experiance and I would most certianly would try that again.

UPDATED: bbPress integrated…

As I said in my previous post I have the picture gallery integrated sufficiently that it will works nicely. Now I’ve been working off and on with getting the theme to play nice with bbPress over the last couple of weeks. It keeps spitting back an error.

Fatal error: Call to undefined function: get_header() in /…/forums/my-templates/header.php on line 27

This is the line where it calls WordPress which I have set in the config file.

require_once(’/…/wp-blog-header.php’);
define(’WP_BB’, true);

This is how I have it setup in my bbPress test site, using the default theme for WordPress. But that is where I stand at the moment. I’ll make sure to keep you all updated.

CONT’D: Gallery package found…

I found a Photo Gallery package that I am going to try with the new web site I building for the family. The package is called Coppermine and am looking forward to how well it works. I also have found mention of a plug-in for Coppermine that will allow me to integrate it with the WordPress database. What pointed me to the Coppermine package was a mention via a post for the WP-Andreas09 Theme being ported for Coppermine. WP-Andreas09 being the theme I am looking to use on the site. So now I have the forums integrated and looks like I’ll be able to integrate the photo gallery too. Now I just need to find a Event/Cal package that I can integrate. This is one of the things I love about WordPress, all the add-ons and integration by the community so that WordPress is greatly expanded and even more useful.


Theme update

A new version of Regulus Theme for WordPress has been released and plan on trying it out on Dev-n-Progress. It my primary theme on most of my sites, so it is a pretty big change for me.


As mentioned a couple of weeks ago I have been working on an update to Regulus. There are only a couple of small changes to the main Regulus file. The big change is the addition of translations.

I have said it before, but this time I think I mean it (I hope). Regulus is now feature complete. There will be no more Regulus updates unless there are any major bugs to be fixed. I will however add new translations if any are sent to me. I want to work on other projects (a new theme?) so Regulus is now done.

 
You can find Regulus at Binary Moon, I find it a really great theme and highly suggest it for those out there looking for theme that has many customizable options and tweaks.

UPDATED: bbPress integrated…

So I’m doing this a little bit out of order but I have installed bbPress and WordPress on a new site, yes I’m slowly ticking  up the AnderTek family of sites. I have them up and running with each having their own DB, but using WordPress DB for the user accounts. Just a little hint when using two Databases  make sure that you don’t have the password and host server names swapped, just does not seem to work :-) So for those ticking off points, I’ve got the two installed (WordPress / bbPress). I still have some integration like having them use the WP Theme in bbPress and to have a link to forum (bbPress). Since this is going to require some coding I’m not going to develop on Dev-n-Progress, just not going to be stable enough to allow.

Update - 11/04/2006:
I have wrapped the WordPress Theme around bbPress install, which just took some tweaking of the bbPress Theme and referencing the WordPress install that it was associated with it.

Update - 11/06/2006:
They didn’t take much, and was quite a simple, I now have a static page that access the access the forums. I had not updated the options permalink options to date and title. Then the setting I found on the bbPress Support Forums setting the Page’s Post Slug = Folder name of the bbPress install folder. Side note you do need to have bbPress located in a sub-folder of the WordPress you are referencing from.

WP 2.0.5 has hit the street

WordPress has been released and am in the process of rolling it out to Dev-N-Progress and see how it shakes out.  

Here are some of the changes coming in WordPress 2.0.5:

  • is_feed() status is preserved when handling 404s
  • manually entering pages greater than the number of pages for a given post now shows the highest numbered page
  • improved security in wp-db-backup plugin
  • user description is no longer HTML-entity converted going into the database
  • fix for rel=”nofollow nofollow” repetition
  • plugins are sorted by plugin name, instead of filename
  • multi-line options in /wp-admin/options.php are preserved
  • the authors dropdown is now sorted by display_name
  • the_meta() properly ignores keys that start with an underscore
  • post meta keys and data are escaped properly on the post screen
  • users are prevented from entering strings that will be interpreted as serialized data when coming out of the database
  • make_clickable() no longer adds links within links
  • error suppression
  • i18n fixes

This is not an exhaustive list… just the important ones, or the ones I thought people would care about.

Update: I have rolled out WordPress 2.0.5 to Dev-N-Progress and so far so good.

bbPress has hit ver 0.73…

For those keeping track, not sure if there are any out there. Get your bbPress on, everybody! I’ll have to give it a try and see the improvements, hate to say it but have not had a chance to keep up on it.

After a couple of weeks of kicking the tires, we’ve decide we’ve fixed enough bugs to put out a new version of bbPress. So here it is: 0.73, the latest in the bbPress “Bix” series.

The changes in brief:

  • Improved rewrite rules generation
  • Template cleanup
  • Much better support for non-English forums including support for right-to-left languages
  • Improved installation
  • Even better integration with other software
  • And, of course, a small security fix

More detailed information about the changes can be gleaned from the tickets we fixed and the code we improved.

UPDATE: Live Writer 1.0 update

They have released an update to Windows Live Writer 1.0 Beta. They have many new improvements, one of the ones that I found most announcing was the Spell Check hot key, it has been updated to F7. There is also a plugin BlogThis written to work directly from IE and in FireFox.

This update to Windows Live Writer 1.0 (Beta) features:

  • Tagging support
  • Support for Blogger Beta
  • Improvements to categories
  • And more…(linked)

You can also now visit the Writer community on Windows Live Gallery to download more plugins and extensions for Writer.  Some of the plugins currently featured on Gallery are:

  • “Blog This” Extensions for IE & Firefox
  • Emoticon, Eventful, and Flickr plug-ins for inserting more rich content

I also found a site that hosts a great collection of Windows Live Writer plugins. There are plugins to insert YouTube videos or insert current audio file you are listening to in Media Player or iTunes, to name just a couple. I would differently give it a look through.

Can Vista cause some one to go MIA?

Well I can say I am liking what I have seen so far with Windows Vista, RC1. I had been running Beta 2 in VM since it became available via the CPP (Customer Preview Program). For those of you who signed up for Vista Beta 2 in June for the CPP you should have received an e-mail allowing to download Vista RC1. For those who did not sign-up or get to sign-up they will be opening up to new participants in the next couple of weeks.

Now for for the rest of the story. I down loaded Vista RC1 last Thursday and have rebuilt my laptop with it as the my main OS. The last couple of days I have finally been able to get my laptop to some semblance of order and to a point of being able to use it as my primary machine. So between work, family, and computer building my time has been totally consumed, sleep being a bit lacking initially. So that is where I had disappeared off to, and contrary to popular belief I had not taken holiday to Pluto.

Mighty Seek - PodPress

While I was looking around for add-ons for composing posts and pages I ran across a plug-in, called PodPress, that allows for PodCasts to be posted also. The best part of this plug-in is that it allows the podcast to refernced in the RSS feed for the blog. The ironic thing about this is my friend the Library Despot was looking into this very thing for his blog - the despot podcasts.
